Spotlight! Dynamic Light Assist Technology (DLAT)
Dynamic Light Assist Technology (DLAT) is becoming a buzzword. The market for this technology is expected to rise from $1.9 Billion in 2022 to $4.8 Billion by 2032 (3).
Kicked off by Volkswagen, variable road illumination allows for high-beam use continuously. Cameras and/ or light sensors adjust headlights based on driving conditions, masking the headlights automatically when vehicles are incoming or ahead. These lights modify where the light ends, ending the beam up to where the vehicles ahead or oncoming would be visually impacted. These cameras consider road topography as well, as at high speeds and on uneven terrain low beams may not provide the illumination necessary. Additionally, VW’s headlights swivel to increase visibility around turns.
This technology can eliminate the additional concern of discomfort and visibility from your lights and others at night. One less thing to think about.
But, of course, there are always compromises to change. Will people get used to driving with them, and thus struggle without them? Beyond this, there is a surge in demand for premium features, but technology like this can become costly, particularly with LEDs.
