Intersections : UNSDGs

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), adopted by all UN members in 2015, provides a global framework for peace and prosperity for people and planet. The Goals have intersections amongst society, the environment, and infrastructure. Here, we will explore a few and acknowledge the depth. The UNSDGs are defined as follows.

Which consider Society?

Almost every one. By addressing poverty, educational disparities, inequalities, unemployment, exclusion, urban development, potential risks, and governance the UNSDGs show the importance of focusing on people….Not only are many specifically focusing on people, people live in this environment and off of it’s resources.

Which consider Environment?

Everything exists in the environment. Climate,  life, and resources make up the environment, but investing in people is investing in diverse perspectives and creative solutions. Cities and communities are key emitters. It results in healthy people who can focus on sustainability. The people who will make the decisions of how we continue to treat our planet. Ensuring environmental sustainability ensures environmentally sustainable practices.

Which consider Infrastructure?

Infrastructure has a vital role in achieving sustainable development. While infrastructure is specifically designated in SDG #9, the impact goes beyond. Sustainable cities & communities are built upon infrastructure. Energy is shared by infrastructure. Waste is managed via infrastructure. Resources are transported via infrastructure. As the foundation for economic growth and social progress, infrastructure can be a catalyst for achieving goals. By integrating sustainable principles into planning & design, construction, and operations & maintenance, drives inclusive and resilient development and supports the well-being of present and future inhabitants.

The interconnectedness of the goals speaks to how truly holistic their approach is. How truly dependent sustainability is on so many factors. It also depicts the depth of collaboration needed across all sectors, ages, countries, people to achieve the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
